Children Canteen
Payatas, Philippines
Payatas is a city 40 km from the capital Manila and it is the former biggest landfill in all of the Asia, as it closed only in 2017. However, the massive waste field still creates an unbreathable, putrid, and nauseating air that infects the whole city. The poorest residents have to dig daily in the landfill to search for empty bottles, plastic and food containers that they can resell and earn maybe 70 pesos a day, not even 1 euro. Payatas is sadly remembered for the 2000 landslide disaster, when tons of waste engulfed nearby houses and killed more than 300 residents. The mortality age remains in the city around 40 years old due to the fumes of the pollution, which results in respiratory illnesses, infection, tuberculosis, pneumonia, hypertension, and malnutrition.
Need You International sustains the centre of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity of Don Orione. Thanks to our contribution of 250 euros a month, 50 children from 2 to 12 years old can access freely the canteen for a daily meal of rice and beans, fish, and vegetables.
